Leo Lazarus
Morning light, black cockatoos
Yellow tailed black cockatoos
You visit me once more in the morning
Gentle flocking through the luminous gums
Towards the rising sun
Whenever I hear you calling
I stop, and cast about for you
From within four walls too many
I depart, enter the realm of open sky
Which feels so different
A universe of clarity for a crown
There you are, my loves
Full of smooth lustre
Of a companionship only the flying
Could bring to dwellers of ground
A fragment of my being
Flies with you in these moments
So I forget I have not wings
Rise with that morning sun
Until you vanish, trailing notes
Leaving me to walk a little lighter
Upon the cool and giving Earth
